A Duel of Sorts - Part 1
by Dannee and Iorek
Aug 4, 2007
Narrator: Seeing as Iorek and Dannee tend to post a number of card comments on www.kitsdb.com , and they both appreciate each other’s comments, even though they disagree at times, (and sometimes come to blows, but it's ok, they have low revive costs!), they decided it would be nice to feature an article that would be a 'deck duel' along with 'comments duel' on each other’s decks and gameplay.
Iorek: With a short distraction, I forgot to copy down the cards in my hand, But I attempted to reconstruct the hand from the game log and what I remembered. Whatever those 2 cards were doesn't matter, as I played them as complications.. so they obviously weren't that important. ^^;;
Dannee: With Cross (Deep Cover Agent) and Naquadah Reactor available as a first turn play, and Nirrti (Goddess of Darkness) in my hand along with a good obstacle coverage of all but combat, I decided to keep my hand. I had one fewer experience, so I had to go first and get a character stopped. I hate going first. Retrieve Artifact was bad, with Daniel Jackson (Linguistics Expert) stopped. What would you do in this situation?
Iorek: With Nirrti (Goddess of Darkness) in my hand, I had to keep. Plus Ill-Gotten Gains means I had any Gear I wanted, this is also a huge plus. I had no Culture Obstacles, so I stopped Daniel Jackson (Linguistics Expert). and with my super-hack on, I could tell that a culture mission was on top! ^^;;
Dannee: I played Naquadah Reactor, which would help me build up my hero side next turn. This way I can drop a 4 cost character on the table, if I need to. Iorek gave me the mission by draining himself of power and placing Nirrti (Goddess of Darkness) on the table. At the time I think Nirrti (Goddess of Darkness) should have waited until she could provide some more return on the current mission, but we’ll see how she turned out in this game.
Iorek: The way I see it, If Dannee was developing his board with the Naquadah Reactor, I had to develop mine. Plus I'd like to get more power for the obstacles in my hand. So a 4 - 3 means he's got 33% more power then I do. but a 5 - 4 means he only gets 20% more power. Not to mention that on Ingenuity or Science missions, I've got an extra 2 difficulty! and Nirrti (Goddess of Darkness)'s text doesn't hurt at all... ^^;;
Dannee: Yes, Nirrti (Goddess of Darkness)'s text helps a lot, as well as developing your board, but usually missions come first and foremost. Giving up a 4 experience mission to me is dangerous and nearly proved fatal. However, as we'll see, Nirrti (Goddess of Darkness)'s investment did provide a good return later in the game. Sometimes it's also important to know when to allow your opponent to win a mission.
Iorek: Though Missions do come first - If I had a Culture Adversary that cost 3 or less, that would have been a better play. But as it turns out, I had to weigh the odds, bite the bullet, and play Nirrti (Goddess of Darkness) for the sake of my later gameplan.
Dannee: A Combat mission comes up, which is not good as my hand now consists of no Combat obstacles. I wait until he has two characters assigned. No need to do anything until he’s about to complete the mission. I have the option of playing a complication and forcing him to assign another character, or playing Nirrti (Goddess of Darkness). Besides, he still has 3 power. I have no idea if playing a complication would even help. I play Nirrti (Goddess of Darkness) since he only has Aldwin (Tok'ra Agent) and Samantha Carter (Problem Solver) available. If he does decide to go on, he probably doesn’t have a 4 difficulty combat mission (with a team like that), so Nirrti (Goddess of Darkness) can stop science or ingenuity.
Iorek: Dannee drops Nirrti (Goddess of Darkness)! A questionable play. But how can I question it when I did the same thing less then 2 minutes ago? ... ... ... Good play!
Iorek: I was greedy on my first turn, but with 3 power, and 2 ready characters, I figured... what the heck. And if I had Olaf (Cimmerian Fighter) or Jarrod Kane (Chief Aide) in my hand, it would have meant 2 missions! But instead I get a stupid computer... best. gear. ever.
Dannee: As predicted, he doesn’t have the skills to complete the next combat mission. Dialing Computer is one of the few gears that you can play first turn along with an Ill-Gotten Gains. I'm still looking forward to the time when the villains will have some way to counter Event cards. Here's hoping.
Dannee: With Nirrti (Goddess of Darkness) on the table and Anise (Determined Archaeologist) in hand, I have to be careful how I play this. If I play Anise (Determined Archaeologist) too early, she may not survive for next turn.
Dannee: By assigning my team characters first, he can’t really wait to assign Nirrti (Goddess of Darkness). Once she’s at the mission, Anise (Determined Archaeologist) is safe.
Dannee: He made me work for it, but I got to complete the mission and keep my support character alive for later. And I get the glyph Harold Maybourne (Ally of Opportunity) needs to boot! The only down side is this mission was only two experience points and with two skip a skill decks, experience is big. If that mission was a 3 or 4 experience point mission, I’d be at a big advantage. As it is, it’s only mediocre.
Iorek: I question the lack of experience on this mission. "SCORPIUS... MAYBOURNE LIKES SCORPIUS." not bad, not good, but not bad. I have failed to stop the pacifist team twice now, maybe that is bad.
Iorek: Who saw that coming?
Dannee: I still don’t have red obstacles in my hand so I can’t stop him. I have to put up with trying to slow him down. After he assigns two characters the only thing I can do is play a complication to make him assign another. Unfortunately, that character also gets to be readied due to the game text on that mission.
Dannee: The next mission is a 5 difficulty science mission, which was just fine for me, but it could have been better. With a Team Compromised in my hand that obstacle turned into 1 power for 3 difficulty (since I got to block Aldwin (Tok'ra Agent)). Also, I wish to be punishing, so I play System Overload to get rid of his Dialing Computer. Unfortunately, at this point he had no support characters out, so my Nirrti (Goddess of Darkness) sat on the sidelines, just itching to destroy another character. But alas, she must wait.
Iorek: Short lived... the Computer did it's deed. And will be sorely missed. Where's a Galaran Memory Device when you need one!
Iorek: Seeing Nirrti (Goddess of Darkness) on the table, And fearing destruction, I went on to another mission to play Whitlow (Covert Contact). This was probably a bad idea. If I had waited, I could have killed Nirrti (Goddess of Darkness)! But what are the chances of getting all 3 Combat missions in your first 5 missions? Lets see... 5 choose 3 for the numerator, 12 choose 3 for the demoninator. that's 1/22 or 4.54%
Dannee: Err... Right....
Dannee: When Pursue the Harcesis hits the table Iorek is just itching for his Stonewalled, which is nowhere to be seen. I assigned Daniel Jackson (Linguistics Expert) and Svetlana Markov (Brilliant Scientist) for the best chance at winning the mission. An Unlikely Friends or Naquadria Hallucinations could have hurt, too, but I had Raully (Undercover Operative) as a backup. After Iorek played a couple obstacles I assigned Samantha Carter (Problem Solver), because she wants the glyph. Her ability is so powerful to either stop bad obstacle failure text, or on culture or ingenuity missions even be able to provide more skills than otherwise possible. I leave Harold Maybourne (Ally of Opportunity) behind, too, because with his glyph he can still add skills to the mission, even if blocked.
Iorek: There was no stopping this mission. There never is, unless you have previously mentioned obstacles. My goal was instead to keep the team to 1 mission. And free up my hand to draw some new cards. Must. Have. New. Cards.
Iorek: supersam mission! :D
Dannee: Except in unique situations, rule one of the villain side is usually to wait until they have enough skills assigned to complete the mission before putting forth any power or adversaries. Repeating Time is expensive here, but with two characters assigned (and will be stopped after the mission) and it’s unique ability to make all characters skills -1, I can afford to play it.
Iorek: Oh no!
Iorek: Oh no!
Dannee: Nothing much happened here. With Repeating Time he can’t possibly win a separate mission. I had to assign Nirrti (Goddess of Darkness) when I did to get use of her text to destroy a character, or he may have just passed and I lose the opportunity.
Dannee: Generally, on a science or combat mission, it’s good to assign support characters first, or else they may be blocked, and killed, by Brainwashing. On a Culture or Ingenuity mission you would usually assign them after your opponent has less than 4 power, or they may be killed by Carniverous Creatures.
Iorek: Oh no!
Dannee: Here we see that Iorek probably doesn’t have Brainwashing, or else he would have blocked Anise (Determined Archaeologist) with it. Team Compromised is out there, but here it does us little harm for completing this mission. Harold Maybourne (Ally of Opportunity), with his glyph, can still provide skills to the mission, even when he’s blocked.
Iorek: Anise (Determined Archaeologist) is bad, I wouldn't block Anise (Determined Archaeologist) if there was no one else to block! I'd keep the card in my hand! Pfft... Anise (Determined Archaeologist). ^^;; Ha-Ha! Take that! No Really, I don't even understand why Anise (Determined Archaeologist) is in the deck, There have to be better Choices. I just don't like her text, and I find other characters have similar stats.
Dannee: Anise (Determined Archaeologist) was in my deck because of the very situation we were discussing on the last turn. How many times has my Pursue the Harcesis or --insert name of mission here-- been stopped dead in its tracks because some bozo decided to play a Stonewalled on Daniel Jackson (Linguistics Expert)? Other uses of Anise (Determined Archaeologist) in this deck: Continue on to second mission with only Daniel Jackson (Linguistics Expert) and Svetlana Markov (Brilliant Scientist) available. What? That was a combat mission? Crap! The opponent played a Mind Probe! Let's use Anise (Determined Archaeologist) to stop Svetlana Markov (Brilliant Scientist) and ready Samantha Carter (Problem Solver), and then use Samantha Carter (Problem Solver)'s ability to get rid of obstacle with punishing text. Still, I might ditch Anise (Determined Archaeologist) for another copy of Kendra (Child of Jebanna) in my deck for the added culture and good synergy with Samantha Carter (Problem Solver).
Iorek: Sure in rare situations, But not in this game! I think I'd prefer Kendra (Child of Jebanna), since she has higher stats and her ability is alot more useful.
Dannee: Again, I assign my support early. If he doesn’t have what it takes to stop me, more ready team characters may help me complete a second mission.
Iorek: This is my secret weapon. Fire Rain is awesome... Especially if they fear stopping cards against their support, then you can block someone more important.
Iorek: well that didn't pan out. Where did that 6 power come from!?
Dannee: Normally this would be end of mission, with Fire Rain blocking the last two of my team characters. But Samantha Carter (Problem Solver) has her glyph and Naquadah Reactor can destroy an obstacle, too. What would you do? Since Samantha Carter (Problem Solver) essentially adds 4 skills to the mission, I use Naquadah Reactor to destroy Fire Rain and free up my characters.
Dannee: One of the biggest things that made this game tough on me was Nirrti (Goddess of Darkness)’s character killing ability, which wipes me clean of support. They don’t die ‘till after the mission, though, so with Svetlana Markov (Brilliant Scientist), Daniel Jackson (Linguistics Expert), and Harold Maybourne (Ally of Opportunity)’s ability, I pass the mission.
Iorek: For those of you keeping score at home, Dannee has completed 1 mission each turn, And all I have to show for it is a smiling Nirrti (Goddess of Darkness), and alot of cards in my discard pile.
Dannee: You forget what else you have, Iorek. Two dead support characters. More important was Anise (Determined Archaeologist), which I'm sure would have helped me later in the game. But yes, I now have 4 completed missions.
Dannee: R and R is virtually an auto-include in any skip a skill deck. It helps make up for the fact that you have to pay a power to your opponent to continue.
Iorek: What! who plays R and R, what a waste of a slot! ... :D ... :D ... :D ... okok, no argument from me.
Dannee: And so, with R and R boosting his skills and Wormhole X-Treme! making obstacles cost power +1, there’s nothing I can do to stop the mission. I assign Apophis (Enemy Reborn), even before he assigns Charles Kawalsky (Good Soldier), so that the opponent loses 2 power when I revive Apophis (Enemy Reborn) due to the special ability of Apophis (Enemy Reborn).
Iorek: Apophis (Enemy Reborn) speaks, and it is so. Don't you just love how the Villians talk to you?
Iorek: Makepeace teams up better with Cross (Deep Cover Agent) and Keffler, because he is almost always assigned to the missions - throughout the entire game. Where as Harold Maybourne (Ally of Opportunity) will only get use of the bonus before he's aquired the Scorpius glyph. Afterwards, you are more likely to use Harold Maybourne (Ally of Opportunity)'s ability, rather then have him assigned - since he no longer needs another glyph.
Dannee: At first I disagreed, but after playing a few games with Harold Maybourne (Ally of Opportunity)/Cross (Deep Cover Agent), I agree. I can still play Cross (Deep Cover Agent) to add his two ingenuity to the mission. I choose Harold Maybourne (Ally of Opportunity) to get skills +1 so that Cross (Deep Cover Agent) isn’t stopped, but now it doesn’t matter whether I assign Harold Maybourne (Ally of Opportunity) or use his ability, he still provides skills +3.
Dannee: Again, Nirrti (Goddess of Darkness) is able to clean my table. Cross (Deep Cover Agent) doesn’t get to stick around and I hate that.
Dannee: Here Iorek plays a complication and has enough power to play another. This would have been bad and put me one difficulty above me being able to complete the mission. So, by stopping Samantha Carter (Problem Solver), I turn the Power Surge into a complication. Not only can he no longer withdraw Power Surge, he now needs +1 power to play another complication. This ends up being better then if I had assigned Samantha Carter (Problem Solver), since turning the obstacle into a complication makes the total mission difficulty -1, and it provided the invaluable ability to stopping another complication. So, it turns out Cross (Deep Cover Agent) really did help here, as Harold Maybourne (Ally of Opportunity) was still able to provide three skill points. This situation shows exactly why Samantha Carter (Problem Solver) is so versatile, and why I chose her over Janet Fraiser (Field Medic).
Iorek: 0/5... I think the record says it all.
Dannee: Another example of the power of Samantha Carter (Problem Solver)'s glyph. Muahahaha
Dannee: I now have 18 out of 19 experience points needed, so it’s a close game, but that darned Nirrti (Goddess of Darkness) keeps cleaning out my support characters. If it weren’t for her I’d still have Anise (Determined Archaeologist), Raully (Undercover Operative), and Cross (Deep Cover Agent) on the table.
Iorek: Close? I'm at 11 out of 18 experience points... I'm pretty far behind.
Dannee: Ha! Close, as in, I'm close to kicking your butt!
Narrator: Please tune in next week for our 'exciting conclusion'!
